As we enter the final quarter of 2026, the words of John Bogle, the Founder of The Vanguard Group, come to mind "Time is your friend; impulse is your enemy".

This very thought is being tested as we see financial markets continue to navigate a combination of higher interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty, and resilient corporate earnings. While these developments can create short-term volatility, they also reinforce the importance of maintaining a disciplined, diversified investment approach.

The third quarter highlighted two competing forces: rising interest rates and continued strength in the stock market. Despite pressure from higher borrowing costs, major stock indexes remained near record levels, supported by corporate earnings growth and continued investment in artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, higher Treasury yields have created a more attractive income environment for investors, even as rising rates have weighed on existing bond prices.

Higher Interest Rates Are Reshaping the Investment Landscape

One of the most significant developments this year has been the continued rise in interest rates. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed above 5%, reflecting ongoing inflation concerns, government borrowing needs, and changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

Higher rates generally put downward pressure on existing bond prices, particularly longer-duration bonds. However, they also provide opportunities for investors seeking income, as newly issued bonds offer higher yields than those available during much of the past decade.

In September, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75%–4.00%, responding to persistent inflationary pressures. With inflation remaining above the Fed's 2% target, future policy decisions will likely depend on incoming economic data.

For investors, this environment reinforces the importance of evaluating both interest rate sensitivity and income opportunities within fixed-income allocations.

Markets Have Historically Navigated Political Uncertainty

With the November midterm elections approaching, political headlines will likely become more prominent. While election outcomes can influence market sentiment and expectations surrounding taxes, spending, and regulation, history demonstrates that financial markets have experienced periods of growth under a variety of political environments.

Over time, corporate earnings, economic growth, interest rates, and business fundamentals have generally played a more significant role in long-term investment outcomes than any single election.

Rather than attempting to anticipate political outcomes or short-term market reactions, we believe investment decisions should remain focused on long-term financial objectives, risk tolerance, and individual circumstances.

Looking Ahead

As we approach the end of 2026, several themes will remain important, including inflation, interest rates, geopolitical developments, and continued investment in artificial intelligence.

While uncertainty remains, the economic backdrop has demonstrated resilience, and higher yields have expanded the range of potential income opportunities.

Our focus remains on maintaining diversified portfolios, managing risk, and making thoughtful adjustments as market conditions evolve. We continue to evaluate opportunities across asset classes while remaining mindful of concentration risk and changing economic conditions.

Successful long-term investing is not about predicting every market movement. It is about maintaining a sound strategy through changing market environments.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you would like to discuss how these developments relate to your financial plan or investment portfolio.
